Here is a picture of my skateboard at the show, courtesy of my artist friend Nicole. These were taken opening night. I have not been able to stop by the gallery to take a peak but the photos are awesome. Many minds and talents have come together from pretty different points of view. I am really intrigued by the fish design next to mine, sort of upstaging me.

Here is a photo of my deck when I thought it was done. I took it to school with me and ended up working on it over my lunch period. I think it is much more resolved now.

June’s featured artist at the City of the World Gallery is Erica Hendrickson, a painter and illustrator who finds inspiration in found objects. Her latest works of art have come from old record albums. Using a variety of mixed media and acrylic paint, she explores color and spatial relationships. Erica earned a B.F.A. in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design, following with a masters in Art Education. She currently inspires creative pursuits as an art teacher to the students of Tom Williams Elementary. .

LVSK8, the brainchild of local artist Michael Todoran, is a group show where participating artists paint, draw, carve, or build on blank skate decks.

The opening reception will be held on June 19th, 2009 from7-10 p.m. at the Henri & Odette Gallery in downtown Las Vegas.

Right now I have a blank wooden skate deck sitting in my bedroom, just waiting to get painted!!!

I started this painting about eight years ago...yes 8! I was taking a painting class at PCC with Rebecca Morris, one of my favorite professors ever, and I did this one on my own. I dug it up out of my closet and decided to finish it two weeks ago.

Side note....come see my show at City of the World next month on First Friday! I will be in the main room.

Journey

Imagine a journey, having a beginning, middle and end. This one would be titled, "Where I was." There were so many stages to this piece I can't even begin to explain. It started as a pen drawing I did one First Friday. If you saw me hunched over a pad of paper doodling, this is what I was up to :) I can't stop having the urge to finish everything with gold paint....side effects of living in Las Vegas?

City of the World Fundraiser on January 25th

Save the date: Fundraiser, January 25th, 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., in the City of the World Gallery, a non-profit entity, 1229 Casino Center at Colorado, in the Art District, for high tea – teas and desserts in the gallery, silent auction, and music by Sam Walker Chirico, local musician and artist now showing at City of the World. Tickets are $15 or two for $25. Come on out and enjoy an afternoon with your friends.

I think Edgar Degas has a pastel drawing titled six friends. Or maybe it's four friends, I forget. Either way, it is in storage at the RISD Museum. They rarely take it out due to it's delicate nature. This one would be titled six cats, in honor of Kristin's bf Paul :)

Here is a small painting I created about three years ago. I am bringing it out of storage to see the light of day again! I started the piece by collaging pieces of magazine and then simply painting over them. This way I had more of a solid composition to start with.

Here is my first attempt at some embroidery. It is for a friend's bridal shower. A word to the wise? Invest in some embroidery thread :) That is, of course, if you like the look of tiny stitching and the feeling of working endlessly.

I have been playing with tissue paper lately. I have been caught gluing it on glass, cardboard, and now this! Actually the first few flowers were made using coffee filters and food coloring. Being an art teacher for elementary students re-introduces you to geeky crafting and it can be quite inspirational. The purple background is really just my bedspread haha.

Alright, here is a portrait in pencil that I have been working on. I am shying away from finishing the face because....I am overly critical of my art and it is hard to get a likeness! Maybe I should have a glass of wine before I draw or something to calm my nerves...? Then again knowing me I would spill it on the paper.

Wow it's been awhile since I have written. My latest finished commission has been a house painting for my friend Joanna. I do have to admit that painting pictures that are mostly about inanimate objects are a lot easier. Here is the painting in the beginning stages. Of course I always forget to take a picture after it's done.

Horse Portrait

Here is my second horse portrait in the beginning phase. I added in a different background than what was in the original photo. The horse has such beautiful straight hair, almost like golden straw! The background is mostly green, hence the red underpainting. The horse has orange and red tones, hence the green underpainting. I just took a quick picture with my webcam, so the image is actually the reverse of what the painting is. This is a commission from my friend Justin for his mom. Hope you like it! ( The yellow light in the upper right hand corner is from my window, not a part of the painting.)

Well in between finishing up the calendar year, holiday week at school, and gift shopping, I finished! I am mostly pleased with the results, but as a self critical artist I will hold my thoughts to myself :)

As much as I would have loved to just keep the sketch painting the way it was, I had to finish it (sigh). So I went in with some darks to bring out the contrast in the horse, first with the snout (is that what it's called?) I finished the background, I like how that came out.

I use acrylic paint due to quick drying time and the fact that the smelly oil paint materials give me a headache.... I do miss the color and luminosity of oil.
